Travelling with your baby can feel daunting, especially when sleep is already a delicate balance at home. Whether you’re heading off on a short break or navigating long-haul time differences, protecting your baby’s sleep is one of the most important things you can do.
Why should sleep stay as a priority whilst travelling?
It can be tempting to “go with the flow” on holiday, but babies are not designed to cope well with missed sleep. Overtiredness can quickly build, leading to short naps, frequent night wakings, early rising and increased fussiness. Sleep isn’t a luxury for babies, it’s a biological need. Therefore, protecting it while travelling will help to make the entire experience more enjoyable and less stressful for both of you.
How should I adjust my baby to new time zones?
When travelling long-haul, time differences can feel overwhelming however babies are actually quite adaptable with the right approach.
- Gradual adjustment: If possible, check the time differences in advance. This will allow you to prepare and begin shifting your baby’s schedule by 15-30 minutes per day in the direction of your destination a few days before your departure.
- Use light to your advantage: Exposure to natural light is one of the most powerful ways to reset your baby’s internal clock. Morning light helps shift wake times earlier and evening light helps to push bedtime later. Try to get outside with your baby as much as possible in the first few days at your new destination.
- Settle into new routine: Once you arrive, choose a consistent wake-up time based on the new time zone and build your day from there.
- Be flexible: Be mindful that your baby may need a few days to adjust. Offer slightly earlier bedtimes and be prepared for some night waking but avoid letting the whole routine unravel.
How can I manage naps whilst out and about?
You and your baby don’t need to stay inside all day, but naps still matter.
- Plan your day around sleep windows: Try to plan your day in advance and structure outings between naps, not during them, especially for younger babies.
- Use on-the-go sleep wisely: Prams and carriers can be incredibly helpful for naps on the move, however it is important not to rely on them for every nap. Prioritise at least one good, restorative nap in a proper sleep space each day.
- Monitor wake windows closely: When routines are disrupted, it’s easy to miss your baby’s sleep cues. Keep a close eye on how long they’ve been awake to avoid overtiredness.
- Don’t skip naps to “make the most of the day”: Although this may feel tempting, a missed nap can often lead to a much harder evening and disrupted night sleep.
How do I create a sleep-friendly environment anywhere?
In new places, create a familiar environment to help your baby feel relaxed and comfortable. When possible, consider packing the following to help signal to your baby that it’s time to sleep:
- A travel blackout blind
- White noise to block unfamiliar sounds
- Your baby’s usual sleep essentials e.g. sleep bag, comforter if age-appropriate
How long can my newborn be in a car seat?
When travelling by car, it’s generally recommended that your newborn should not spend more than 2 hours at a time in a car seat. Regular breaks are strongly advised on longer journeys, therefore:
- Plan regular stops on long drives
- Take your baby out of the seat for a stretch and cuddle
- Never use a car seat as a primary sleep space outside of travel
Overall, travelling with your baby doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice sleep, but it does mean being mindful. Protect sleep where you can, stay flexible where you need to and don’t underestimate how important rest is for your baby’s overall wellbeing. With a bit of planning and realistic expectations, you can enjoy your trip and keep sleep on track.
